Bubble in 2026 isn’t the Bubble you remember

Bubble has been in market since 2012. If your mental model of the platform is 'drag-and-drop MVP tool from 2020,' though, it's out of date by about four major releases. In the last 30 months Bubble shipped a new pricing model (Workload Units, 2023), a new responsive engine (2024), native mobile (August 2025), and the Bubble AI Agent (October 2025) — plus a redesigned API Connector with first-class LLM support and a plugin editor that now uses React under the hood.

The platform that was right for $5k MVPs in 2022 is now also right for multi-tenant SaaS, internal enterprise tools, and apps running on dedicated servers with custom infrastructure. We know because we’ve shipped both. Timeline below covers the dense recent window — 2020 onward.

The advanced features that changed the platform

Five Bubble features that matter for production work in 2026. Every one of them is something we’ve used on shipped client projects.

Workload Units (WU) optimization

Workload Units (WU) optimization

Bubble's 2023 pricing shift moved costs from fixed capacity to per-operation Workload Units. A poorly architected app burns 700,000+ WU on a few hundred users; a well-architected one runs the same load on 250,000 WU. The difference is database design, query patterns, conditional logic on workflows, and aggressive caching. We model WU usage during scoping, not after a $40k overage bill.

We use this for
Every Bubble project beyond MVP. Audit + optimization is its own engagement type.
API Connector — including LLM-grade nested JSON

API Connector — including LLM-grade nested JSON

The API Connector has been Bubble's quiet superpower for years; the 2026 revamp added serious nested-JSON handling specifically for LLM responses. We've wired Anthropic, OpenAI, and custom inference endpoints into production Bubble apps where the agent's response shape is non-trivial. OAuth, GraphQL, webhooks, REST — all production-grade.

We use this for
AI features inside Bubble apps, third-party SaaS integrations, custom data pipelines.
Native mobile (iOS + Android, React Native foundation)

Native mobile (iOS + Android, React Native foundation)

Bubble's native mobile builder went GA in August 2025 — real native apps published to the App Store and Google Play, sharing the same Bubble database and backend as the web app. We were in the beta. We've shipped native mobile from this builder. The shared-backend architecture means web and mobile move in lockstep, which used to require a separate React Native team.

We use this for
SaaS products that need both web and mobile from day one without doubling engineering cost.
Bubble AI Agent (October 2025)

Bubble AI Agent (October 2025)

Generates complete pages from natural-language prompts, troubleshoots broken workflows, and reads your app's architecture as context for its suggestions. Not magic — but a real accelerator for first-draft scaffolding. We use it for boilerplate page generation and as a debugging assistant; engineers still own architecture and the heavy logic.

We use this for
Prototyping, page scaffolding, debugging assistance.
Enterprise dedicated cluster + custom infrastructure

Enterprise dedicated cluster + custom infrastructure

The Enterprise plan moves your app onto dedicated servers with custom Workload Unit allocations, regional hosting, SSO, audit logging, and a dedicated support team. We've architected Bubble apps running on dedicated clusters with thousands of concurrent users — and we've seen the ceiling. On one app the API throughput approached the dedicated cluster's published limit during peak hours, which is the kind of thing you only learn from shipping at that scale.

We use this for
Mission-critical SaaS, regulated industries (with appropriate data architecture), apps with predictable high traffic.

Why we’ve stayed on Bubble since 2022

Bubble has been part of our stack since the year we founded the agency. We’ve watched it evolve from a fast-prototyping tool into a platform that runs production SaaS for tens of thousands of users — and we’ve contributed to that evolution as a beta-test participant on most of the recent feature releases.

Top 3

Largest Bubble agencies in the world, 2023

At our peak in 2023 we were a top-3 Bubble agency globally by project volume. The volume is lower now because we deliberately diversified the stack — but the institutional knowledge is still here, in the engineers who built those apps.

Inside the platform’s evolution

We've been part of Bubble beta programs since 2023 — including the new responsive engine, the native mobile builder, and the API Connector revamp. Beta-test access means we ship advanced features into client projects before they hit general availability.

Projects shipped, every plan tier

Starter, Growth, Team, and Enterprise. We've shipped on all of them. We know which tier fits which build, where the cliffs are, and how to keep WU consumption predictable as a client scales from 100 to 100,000 users.

ENGAGEMENT STORYEnterprise dedicated cluster · Multi-year engagement

The story we tell at scoping calls: we hit Bubble’s API ceiling

One of our long-running enterprise clients runs on a Bubble dedicated cluster — custom Workload Unit allocation, dedicated server resources, regional hosting. During peak traffic, the app’s outbound and inbound API throughput approached the platform’s published per-cluster limit.

Most agencies don’t see this number because they never build the kind of app that triggers it. We did, and the experience shapes how we architect every Bubble app now. Three lessons from hitting the ceiling:

  • Bubble has a real ceiling, but it’s high. The platform can support tens of thousands of concurrent users on dedicated infrastructure with the right architecture. The ceiling is a configuration limit, not a tool limit.
  • Database design is everything past 5,000 users. Every workflow that runs a "search and choose first item" instead of a properly indexed unique-field lookup becomes a WU cost center at scale.
  • You scope dedicated cluster work differently. Enterprise builds need WU modeling before estimation, not after. We model projected WU consumption per user journey during the scoping call — a deliverable most Bubble agencies don’t produce.

The takeaway: hitting Bubble’s ceiling once is the cheapest way to learn what production Bubble actually demands. We’ve paid that tuition. Clients don’t have to.

From $5k MVPs to $1M+ enterprise builds

Most Bubble agencies live in a narrow price band — typically $20k to $80k per project. Our range is wider because we’ve staffed the agency to handle both ends. The smallest project we’ve shipped on Bubble was $5k. The largest was over $1M in total contract value. Both used the same platform.

When Bubble is the right answer

Bubble is the right answer for a specific shape of project — and the wrong answer for others. A six-axis read on whether your project fits.

Bubble fits well Works with care Pick custom code
Team setupNo in-house engineering; founder will maintainSmall engineering team open to no-code5+ engineers already employed
Time pressureNeed to ship in 4–10 weeksNeed to ship in 10–20 weeksCan invest 6+ months for foundation

Integration scale5–10 third-party APIs via API Connector10–30 APIs, some unusual auth30+ APIs, deep ML inference, real-time streaming
Code ownershipComfortable with platform lock-in for speedWants exit ramp documentedMust own the codebase outright on day one

If your project lands mostly in the green column, Bubble is a sound choice and we’ll quote it on Bubble. If it lands mostly in the yellow column, we can still ship on Bubble — but we’ll design for an eventual migration off the platform when revenue justifies it. If it lands mostly red, we recommend custom code from day one. See our custom software development service for that path.

The honest take: when to migrate OFF Bubble

Bubble is excellent at the right phase. There comes a point on a small number of projects where the right move is to migrate off — and pretending otherwise is how clients end up with $40k/year platform bills on apps that should be custom code.

We tell clients to migrate off Bubble when one of these is true:

  1. 1
Your monthly Bubble bill exceeds what 1–2 engineers cost.

Around $8k–$12k/month is the cross-over point for most apps. Above that, custom-code economics start to win.

  2. 2
    You need sub-100ms response times.

Bubble's page-load times in 2026 are improved but still typically 1–3 seconds on desktop for complex pages. Real-time products (trading, gaming, live collaboration) feel sluggish.

  3. 3
You have a HIPAA, PCI-DSS, or similar regulatory requirement.

Bubble doesn't currently offer HIPAA-compliant infrastructure. Regulated data needs custom architecture from day one.

  4. 4
You've raised funding that includes hiring engineers.

Once a real engineering team exists, the lock-in cost of Bubble usually outweighs the platform's velocity advantage.

  5. 5
You're being acquired and the acquirer requires source code.

This happens. We've handled it. The good news: a well-architected Bubble app can be ported to custom code in 12–20 weeks with a clean handoff.

Why teams pick NerdHeadz for Bubble work

Platform veterans, not platform tourists.

Platform veterans, not platform tourists.

On Bubble since 2022. Top-3 globally at peak. Beta-test participants on most of the platform’s recent feature releases. The engineers on your project have seen the platform’s edges, not just its docs.

Honest about platform fit.

Honest about platform fit.

We'll tell you when Bubble is right and when it isn't. We've billed under $5k for the right small project — and we've told clients with the wrong project to go custom-code on day one. That's the credibility play.

WU modeling before quoting.

WU modeling before quoting.

Most agencies quote a Bubble project and discover Workload Unit overage 90 days post-launch. We model projected WU consumption per user journey during scoping and design the architecture against the projected load. No $40k surprise overage bills.

Migration-ready architecture.

Migration-ready architecture.

If your project will eventually need to migrate off Bubble, we architect it that way from day one. Clean data models, isolated business logic, properly scoped APIs. When the migration call comes, the work is days not months.
